• ‘I am inspired by nature. By stone, earth, and the spaces in-between…My aim is to capture these elements in gold and silver, in a collection of pieces made to be touched, worn and treasured’.

John Rocha made his name as a fashion designer, with haute couture collections shown on catwalks the world over.

• More recently, he created a line of clothing for leading high street department store, Debenhams; before going on to produce homewares and interiors.
•  He was then commissioned by Waterford Crystal to develop a collection of contemporary crystal for their range. Prior to Rocha joining waterford, the concept of designer crystal did not exist. Following the launch of his collection, many other crystal companies have also commissioned fashion designers such as Jasper Conran, showing the profound effect Rocha’s range has had.

Born in Hong Kong of Chinese and Portuguese descent, John Rocha moved to London in the 1970’s to study fashion, and subsequently visited Ireland after using Irish linen as part of his graduate collection. He eventually moved to Dublin to develop his designs and is still continuing to work in a studio in the city.

John Rocha has been designing for over 20 years and continues to take his designs to the next level, recently through the introduction of his eclectic and contemporary jewellery range ‘John Rocha Jewellery’ in 2002. 

• The jewellery range is an inspired mix of organic shapes and forms using simple designs which are inspired by Irish themes and celtic art. For example, his signature cross pendant, of which he says ‘there is a simple joy in the fusion of two clean lines which is celebrating the purity of the form of a simple cross in silver’.
• Combining inspiration from Ireland and the other main influence in his life – China – Rocha combines oriental thinking and Irish craft. However, he frequently travels in order to gain additional inspiration from other countries and cultures, obtaining from this a global vision of style.

This designer jewellery range includes simple pieces that can be worn everyday and more dramatic fasion pieces. John Rocha aims to create unique and beautiful pieces of jewellery that complement his contemporary style and reflect his love of craft and tradition. He says ‘All the pieces have a classic beauty and sensual appeal. The shapes and forms are essentially simple and uncomplicated allowing the wearer to create their own individual statements in how they wear them’.

John Rocha’s mantra is about finding what you want and like. He comments, ‘You shouldn’t look at something six months on, and wonder why on earth you bought it’.
