Takada Kenzo was born in 1939 in Himeiji City. He was one of seven children and developed his interest in fashion by reading his sisters’ magazines. Despite his parents’ disapproval in his career choice, he quit Kobe University in order to try to become one of the first male students of Tokyo’s Bunka Fashion College.
In 1964 he moved to Paris – a move funded by the compensation given to him when his home in Tokyo was razed to make way for a new Olympic stadium! From starting at the very bottom of the fashion career ladder, he eventually opened his first Boutique ‘Jungle Jap’ in 1970. His first work drew heavily on traditional Japanese styles but his ‘big silhouette’ designs caught the eye of the fashion industry and he became a major trendsetter for young fashion.
He was one of the first designers to fuse oriental with occidental. In his jewellery, as with his clothing, his designs mix ethnicity, colour, nature, travel and mixed cultures, with freedom, generosity and creation being important themes.
Kenzo’s designer jewellery collections are full of romance and stories.
