Celebrated across the Northern hemisphere, on 21st June, the Summer Solstice is known as the longest day of the year.
The word 'solstice' comes from the Latin word 'sol', for sun, and 'sistere' which means to stop or stand still. This is because, at midday, the sun reaches its highest point and stops advancing North (which it would on most other days) instead it starts to move again in the other direction.
Stonehenge has a special significance to the solstice, as the formation of the stones line up with the movement of the sun. It is the site of a popular event each year, to watch the sunrays move through the rock formations.
